Mandate – OR – What is VFM?
The Vermilion Forest Management Company Ltd. (VFM) is a partnership of eight companies licenced by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) to harvest timber on Crown land in the Sudbury Forest.
VFM’s primary duties are to:
- prepare forest management plans that meet all requirements of provincial legislation
- monitor forest operations to ensure that approved plans are implemented properly, and
- ensure that all harvested areas are regenerated
As the Sustainable Forest Licence holder for the Sudbury Forest, VFM is responsible for:
- preparing, in consultation with the public, 10 year forest management plans in two five year phases
- preparing annual plans for public inspection that detail planned forest operations including harvesting, road construction, and forest renewal activities
- inspecting all forest operations to ensure they comply with approved plans
- gathering, recording, and assessing information on forest condition
- reporting annually to the public on completed harvest activities and regeneration projects
